onza libertad on ebay

I got a nice libertad onza on ebay for $16.67 S/H included. Not a bad price compared to current and recent listings.

I noticed one thing, which is that there is a confusion sowed by various vendors about what is a state-minted coin and what isnt. I think this is an important point of value. the two pics which follow: the state minted coin is a "libertad," and the typical non-state minted round is shown second.

Anybody got a better source cuz these prices are trending towards a big premium over spot and me no likee.

this is a round, I believe, but some vendors make it like it's a state minted coin.

I thought both the "Onzas" and "libertads" were state minted and worth the same. The Onzas I have are much larger diameter than the Libertads, which are thicker and prettier. I bought a bunch of them along with generic rounds at the same price a couple years back.

Do Onzas consistently go for less than Libertads?

The round in the last picture is what I refer to as Onzas.

see, that's what I mean. I take "libertad" as the colloquial term for the state coin, and "onza" is overused kind of like "ounce." my point is, the second thingee is just a round, and people are selling it at premium prices-- to me indicating confusion.

if you search on ebay "onza" you'll get a lot of listings, "onza libertad" pretty much just the state minted coins

I dont get how this came about, but I have been studying Mex silver coinage and this is my issue of the day.

I got another cool Mex silver dollar called a "cap and ray" or something like that; those are really tricky since they had a bunch of different silver contents over the years.

Not to mention, I wonder why "onza" is being used at all since Mayheeco's always been on Metric.

The first coin is generally referred to as a Libertad, and it contains one troy ounce of .999 fine silver. The second coin is generally referred to as an Onza, and it contains one troy ounce of .925 (sterling) silver. Both coins are state issues of Mexico.

Deals on both can often be had on eBay, but I'll be trying to beat you to the Libertads. I have a few Onzas I'd be willing to sell for a good price, though.

Who mints the latter? I bought a whole bunch of them in ignorance, I must have paid about $6.50 each for them way back then or about 40 cents over spot.

Troy measurements are just as odd to us as to them, but troy is the worldwide standard for weighing PM's.

The pic of the Libertad Anty Ep posted looks yellow like sterling, my large onzas don't have such a tint IIRC (they're buried).
Next time I'm digging through my hoard I'll check see how many are onzas and how many are libertads.
If the Libertads bring that much premium I'll trade them off.

In my opinion generic rounds, sterling rounds and onzas and 1 ounce bars and anything else that has a troy ounce of silver are all worth almost the same. I prefer the Prospectors though.

Here's a link with photos of both coins, showing both obverse and reverse (scroll down):

The "Libertad" type does command a premium over the older "Onza" type.

As I understand it both coins are (were) minted at the same place, the Mexico Mint. The onzas preceded the libertads and are no longer made.

APMEX carries the onzas at .45 over spot, except that I went there this morning and the listing is gone from "Wholesale Foreign Silver"; they must have run out. Other than that, I get 'em from eBay when I can grab 'em at a reasonable price. Just snagged 10 last week for $144.99 shipped. I have a policy with both onzas and libertads to not pay more than $1 over spot.

The onza "scale & press" is one of my personal favorites and I have a bunch of 'em, but I think we've had this conversation before!

Re: onza libertad on ebay

There are several variants of govt issued Mexican silver.

As was said previously the original was the .925 Onza with an ASW of 1 troy ounce. Then they came out with the first generation of Libertad, which has a sort of an angel on it. Some time afterwards they came out with a new style of Libertad, it still has an angel but it's actually taken from some Mexican monument that I gather is similar in meaning to New York's Statue of Liberty. I have all three of these variants plus another, a 2 troy ounce new style Libertad.

Many but not all of my old style Libertads have a yellowish, orangish tint to them. It is a combination of tarnish and surface texture. All my new style Libertads are bright and untarnished. The color effect can be found on other silver, too. I have a few five ounce loaf pours from JPM and Silvertowne that are similar.

They're all good coins and I can buy them at 40 cents over spot locally but resell is better on the Libertads than the Onzas unless you find a private buyer because dealers generally discount anything less than .999 fine. The right Onza can command a significant premium to some customers but I don't know how that all works out.
